Natural & Cultural Significance
The Sheehan Family Companies gifted the financial support that made it possible for the NLC to take title to the land with an endowment to provide stewardship in perpetuity. The family recognized the continuous and ongoing impact that colonization has had upon the land and Wampanoag people. Renamed the Wampanoag Common Lands, the NLC is caretaker of these lands on behalf of the Wampanoag Nation.
The NLC staff, students, and fellows conduct scientific studies, including monitoring wildlife populations and climate change effects. This beautiful site is also recognized as having historic and cultural significance, and is subject to regulation under the MA Endangered Species Act. It's dominated by mostly white pine, white oaks, and red maple and several state-listed endangered and critically endangered species. The Trustees of Reservations will hold the conservation restriction.
“We are honored to support the Native American community and the effort to bring to the forefront the role of traditional ecological knowledge in preserving life on earth and ensuring a livable planet for future generations. We have so much to learn from the people who have inhabited this place for millennia.”
— Jerry Sheehan, Chairman of the Sheehan Family Companies
