Natural & Cultural Significance
These islands, presently named Cleveland, Keith and Jefferson are located in the northern portion of Mashpee/Wakeby Pond. They hold special meaning to the Mashpee Wampanoag because they were places of ceremony. Mashpee/Wakeby Pond is one of the deepest and largest ponds on Cape Cod. It is part of the spawning grounds for the blue back herring and a source for many other species to live in, drink from and play. Wakeby in the Wôpanâôt8âôk (Wampanoag language) is wâkupee (wa-ku-pee), meaning moving water as in churned up or stirred up. Wakeby Pond has been known to have an unusual current, and is thus named Wâkupee, moving water. The Trustees hold the Conservation Restrictions on these islands and manage the nearby Lowell Holly Reservation within a short swim from Cleveland and Keith Islands. The islands are accessible by non-motorized vessels only to preserve the vegetation.
