Natural & Cultural Significance
The Nemasket River Village had formerly been used as a farm and was slated for development before the owners discovered archeological evidence 1000s of years old. An archeological survey of the property determined the location was one of the largest historic Wampanoag sites ever to be found undisturbed. In order to protect the location, the owner established both a Conservation Restriction and a Cultural Respect Easement with the Native Land Conservancy. The Archaeological Conservancy co-holds the restriction. The property was then turned over to the Town of Middleborough. NLC assists with its care.
