Natural & Cultural Significance

Jacqueline had a desire to protect the land and believed it to have cultural significance to the Wampanoag. Part of the area is an abandoned cranberry bog (“Simpkins Bog”) that drains a large upstream watershed around Union Street as the headwaters of Whites Brook into Chase Garden Creek and thus to Cape Cod Bay.  The old bog has evolved through natural succession into a deciduous forested swamp. With red maple and highbush blueberry, this site provides a diverse wildlife habitat.  Simpkins Bog is a shining example of how the earth has restored itself when left to its natural process. The Yarmouth Land Trust holds the Conservation Restriction.
